This is sad. It's very upsetting to me that it is illegal in the United Stated to eat horsemeat, but that it is not illegal in the United States to slaughter horses for consumption if it's being shipped off to another country. I think, at best, it's hypocritical.
ILLINOIS HORSE SLAUGHTERHOUSE BACK IN BUSINESS "Last year, over 100,000 American horses were killed in the United States and shipped to Europe and Japan for human consumption. A Belgian company, Cavel International, runs one of our country’s few remaining horse slaughter plants near DeKalb, IL." "The transport of horses to slaughter houses is often inhumane, and many horses are injured even before reaching the slaughter plant due to overcrowded conditions. Some are shipped for more than 24 hours at a time without food, water or rest. In addition, the methods used to slaughter these horses once they arrive at the plant often do not result in a quick death. The horses are often forced to endure repeated stuns or blows, and often remain conscious during their slaughter. " If you haven't visited the ASPCA website, it's well worth the visit, lots of great information and even shopping! |
| jude July 28, 2007 09:33 AM PDT i believe joe may be right in that the ban on eating horse meat here may be more due to meat processing standards/chemical bans, etc., rather than a moral issue. to be honest, the slaughter of cows, sheep, horses...it's all very much the same for me. when you really look at the animal, and it looks back at you...well. for me, it makes no difference what species it is. i'm reminded of 'norman' the calf in 'city slickers'...never looked at a hamburger in quite the same way since. am i a vegitarian? no...but i refuse to eat lamb, or veal, and only rarely beef. there are a few other instances. chickens, however, are not safe around me... | ||
| Joe the Troll July 27, 2007 08:53 PM PDT Hmm. The last two comments hit the points. It is odd that we can kill them here and ship them there but not eat them here (not that I want to), until you consider the fact that we hold the same standard for industrial chemicals and pesticides. Chemicals that are illegal to use here are legal to manufacture here and ship elsewhere. And of course Paula hits it on the nose with the humane slaughter, as odd as that sounds. I grew up near there - I hope that no one I knew and liked is involved in such an enterprise. | ||
| Miz UV July 27, 2007 07:31 PM PDT It seems worse to eat horses than cows, but I don't know why. I guess it's pretty arbitrary. But either way, they should be killed humanely. I used to not eat any meat but fish and may go back to that eventually, now that my anemia's been cured. | ||
| AbbyNormal July 27, 2007 12:50 PM PDT Whether one is a meat-eater or not, or whether one is okay with eating horse meat or not are beside the point I think. This is just silly. It's okay to slaughter if somebody else does the eating? | ||
| raejane July 27, 2007 11:58 AM PDT Hi Jerry, Well, I think that more people consider horses 'sacred'... a pet. A horse would be like eating your dog. Uncooth. Having said that, I was vegetarian for several years. I am anemic and my husband eats meat, so I started eating meat again. I don't eat it very often and tend to still have guilt over it.. but that's just me personally. I guess even for myself eating a horse just seems worse... I dunno. I guess I can't explain it. | ||
| jerry July 27, 2007 11:45 AM PDT Is eating cows any worse than eating horses? Just curious, i've not read your blog enough to know your stance on these things. btw I got here from Beej | ||
| RaeJane July 27, 2007 10:28 AM PDT >>>that isn't to say that I don't feel that (some) humans are not innocent and vunerable<<< Correction- that isn't to say that I don't feel that (some) humans are innocent and vunerable. I have double negatives.. grr. | ||
| RaeJane July 27, 2007 10:26 AM PDT Yea, I know. Animals are innocent. They don't create the world they live in, they just try to adapt to it. In the midst of all of it, they remain loyal and loving, right to the very end. To me it's about respect and honor. I just don't understand why it's so hard to love and respect the creatures that are far more innocent and vunerable than humans. that isn't to say that I don't feel that (some) humans are not innocent and vunerable, of course they are. But for the most of us, we create our world, our circumstances and our future... for those of us with so much 'influence' it only seems right that we do what's right. And here I am on a tangent... | ||
| Deirdre July 27, 2007 10:06 AM PDT And people wonder why on earth I have more compassion for animals than I do people. | ||
